Welcome to Abdominal Transplant Surgery
Housed in the oldest university west of the Mississippi, the abdominal transplant programs at Saint Louis University began with the first kidney transplant in St. Louis in the 1970s. Since that time the programs have evolved into providing access to transplantation for patients in need of kidney, kidney/pancreas, pancreas after kidney and liver transplantation.
Partnered with a world-class team of hepatologists, nephrologists, cardiologists and anesthesiologists, as well as other subspecialists at Saint Louis University Medical Center, the abdominal transplant programs are in the process of becoming a true Center of Abdominal Transplantation. With the recruitment of a team of dedicated personnel, and the retention of team members who have been part of the program for many years, the abdominal transplant programs are entering a new era of patient and family-centered care, taking advantage of new surgical techniques and resources now available at SLU Hospital.
Collaborative projects with basic science, industry and our world-class outcomes research entity, SLUCOR, made our abdominal transplant programs on the cutting edge of transplant science. With the current dedication from the University and our care partner, Tenet, the abdominal transplant programs are poised to become the center of excellent care for the people of St. Louis and the surrounding areas with organ failure. We strive to provide compassionate and state-of-the-art care for patients with organ failure, while honoring the donor gift and stewarding that gift to the best of our abilities.
