Neurosurgery Residency

The residency in neurological surgery at Saint Louis University is a seven year graduated training experience. The program has a staff of five full-time faculty and two interventional neuroradiolgy associates.

Major areas of interest include the following:

  • Vascular Neurosurgery
  • Neurosurgical Oncology
  • Neurosurgical Trauma and Critical Care
  • Spinal Instrumentation
  • General Spinal Neurosurgery
  • Functional Neurosurgery
  • Stereotactic/Image-Guided Neurosurgery (including CyberKnife)
  • Skull Base Neurosurgery
  • Pediatric Neurosurgery
  • Endovascular Neurosurgery
  • Endoscopic Neurosurgery

Four years of the residency program are spent in clinical neurosurgery, including one year as a chief resident and one year as a subspecialty chief resident.  Another year is spent rotating on the neurology, neuropathology, neuroradiology, and neuro-opthalmology services.  At least one year is spent in research either in the neurosurgical laboratories or in clinical research.

The two training sites, Saint Louis University Hospital and Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, together provide over 1,100 admissions and 800 operations per year on the neurosurgery service.

Although the John Cochran VA Medical Center is not considered a primary training site, the faculty staff all neurosurgical consultations at the VA.  This arrangement provides a direct conduit for referrals and transfers to the St. Louis University Hospital neurosurgery service and gives the residents the distinct advantage of being exposed to the often interesting and complex pathology at the VA without being taken away from our primary site at SLUH.
