SLU Student Named Missouri Teacher Leader of Tomorrow

05/06/2025

Saint Louis University senior Aurora Hofius has been named a 2025 Missouri Teacher Leader of Tomorrow, a statewide honor that recognizes aspiring educators who exemplify leadership, passion and commitment to the teaching profession.

The award, presented by the Missouri Milken Educators in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, celebrates just 13 teacher candidates from across the state who demonstrate the values and practices that define effective, future-ready educators.

Hofius, a secondary English education major, is currently completing her student teaching at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School, where she works with students in grades 9 through 12. She was nominated by faculty in SLU’s School of Education, who praised her dedication to student learning, collaborative spirit and thoughtful approach to classroom practice.

“Aurora stands out as both a reflective practitioner and a collaborative teammate,” said Benton M. Brown, Ph.D., assistant dean in the School of Education. “She brings warmth, professionalism, and a deep commitment to equity and inclusion into every learning environment. Her students and colleagues are better for it.”

Hofius has also been actively involved in professional learning communities during her time at SLU, contributing to school improvement projects and demonstrating a clear vision for her role as a teacher-leader. Faculty noted that she consistently seeks out feedback, engages in meaningful reflection, and advocates for practices that center student voices.

Established in 2022, the Missouri Teacher Leader of Tomorrow Award aims to elevate the teaching profession and highlight the next generation of Missouri educators who are ready to make a lasting impact in classrooms and communities across the state.

“I’m honored and humbled to be selected,” Hofius said. “This recognition affirms my commitment to helping students thrive — and I’m excited to grow alongside them as a teacher and learner.”
