The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) is the highest honor from the U.S. government for early-career scientists and engineers. Kinsey was selected for the PECASE in 2025, a testament to his innovation in the field of nonlinear optics and nanophotonics.

Kinsey's research has explored how light interacts with materials at nanoscale, with applications ranging from sensors and communications technology to information security. His team focuses on materials that respond in unusual ways to light, leading to breakthroughs in how to manipulate and control light at incredibly small scales and to the characterization of new materials, interactions and devices.

With the support from the PECASE award, Kinsey's lab will expand into a new frontier known as space-time optics, a filed that could revolutionize how we transmit and process quantum information by controlling the frequency and behavior of individual photons.

I'm excited to leverage this opportunity to continue to pay it forward by focusing focus on the student — supported by SLU's mission of Cura Personalis — to form a new generation of technical leaders to influence the world and to do some cool research along the way." — Nate Kinsey, Ph.D.

About the School of Science and Engineering

Saint Louis University formed the School of Science and Engineering in 2022 to better meet the future needs of its students and faculty. The school brings together select departments from the College of Arts and Sciences — chemistry, computer science, earth and atmospheric sciences, and physics — with the former Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology.
